Selecting Sprouting

One other way for sprouting.

Preferably pick seeds that have been grown organically or that are free of harmful chemicals.

Measure 1/2 cup each of shelled sunflower seeds, mung beans, lentils and wheat berries. Measuring will become unnecessary once you become accustomed to sprouting.

Check & remove broken & damaged seed which will not sprout and can cause spoilage.

Rinse well until the water runs clear.

Soak overnight in pure water. Water level should be well above the top of the seeds to allow for swelling. House plants can benefit from the nutrients in the soak water.

Rinse well in the morning.

Spread seed in colanders, glass jars, or pans and place in a lit, well-ventilated area.

Rinse well 2 to 3 times a day.

Harvest when small tails appear, usually in one or two days.

Drain well until dry before serving to your birds. Dry sprouts will continue to grow in your birds' dishes during the day instead of spoiling as wet or cooked foods often do.

Welcome...

Sprouting should be an important part in any parrots diet. It is highly nutritious & I don't know a parrot that doesn't love sprouts!

I have it as a morning breakfast for my eclectus. Think if it as a kinda energy boosting cereal for kids. That's what sprouts are for eclectus parrots.

There are many ways to sprout successfully. It depends on what works best for you. Here is one way: Sprouting For Parrots

What ever you sprout must be fresh. If it smells old or mouldy, water is unclear, ditch it. If the water is clean & seeds smell sweet or have no smell they're fresh.

I found the fresher they are, the quicker they sprout. I can have sprouts within 2 days if the seed is supper fresh.

You can buy containers that have grates in them from just about any supermarket. The grates help the sprouts to last for a few days. Without these grates they can get mouldy & smelly within a day. With sprouts you will always find drained water floating around the bottom. I place a paper towel at the bottom of the container, then the grate. This soaks up everything.

Sprout mix

It's good to add things to the sprouts also. Things like greens, chilli's, anything with flavour that will benefit the parrot. This is just an idea of what my eclectus will get for breakfast. The main part of the recipe of course is sprouts, the rest of it is what ever I decide to add. It can be something different each time.

Sprouting for healthier birds

Sunflower seeds should not be removed! Sunflower seeds, although quite fatty do have nutritional values. Sprouting sunflower seeds are even better & recommended.

As an alternative to sprouting, if you find it unsuccessful, you can soak seed for 24 hours hours. This gives you good nutrition also.
